Normal eye pressure is maintained by a fine balance between inflow and outflow of fluid in the eye (aqueous). Raised eye pressure is called Glaucoma. It is commonly caused by obstruction to the drainage channels of the eye. Although infants and children can rarely be affected, glaucoma is more common in the adult population. The raised pressure can irrecoverably damage the optic nerve and can result in permanent loss of vision. In the chronic variety it is the peripheral vision that is affected first, and also slowly so that the disease creeps on a person without one being aware.
