In a world of complete darkness, the ability to see loved ones can be nothing more than a dream.
For those without sight, the gift of vision can be the most precious boon; a gift that can illuminate their world and introduce them to joys that we take for granted.
Though, a small town of just 150,000 people, Neemuch accounts for maximum per capita
eye donations in
India. More than 1308 pairs have been donated in this area so far and about 550 have been transplanted
through surgery by us.
Out of the 15 million Indians in the dark due to blindness, 3 million suffer due to corneal
blindness. The major causes of this are infections, injuries, malnutrition, congenital disorders etc. The pathetic situation is that a majority of them belong to the younger age group.
Medical science does have the answer to bring light to those suffering from corneal
blindness. Over the past 50 years, "Corneal Transplantation Surgery" is being performed in our
country. However, the
important requisite for this surgery is the availability of high quality donor cornea.
You can help this happen.
Let Eye Donation be your family tradition.
It is ultimate gift of love towards mankind. After death our eyes become useless commodity that we
aerate or bury.
This can be recycled into the priceless gift.
The eyes can't be
bought or sold. You can only get it as a gift from a departed
soul. Eye donation leaves no mark on the face of the dead body. In the past people were not aware of blood donation. They were gradually educated and
convinced. Now it happens voluntarily. Similarly, we should convince people that after death,
eyes could be of use to someone to lead a normal and happier life.
Anyone, regardless of age, can donate eyes. Spectacle wearers, and people suffering from systemic disorders like
diabetes, hypertensions, asthma
etc. can also donate eyes. Even those who had undergone cataract surgery, can
donate eyes.
Eyes can be donated even if they have not been pledged earlier. One donor can give sight to two
Corneally blind people.
You could be instrumental in ensuring an
eye donation in time. If someone unfortunately dies in your family or friend circle,
eyes have to be enucleated within six hours of time of death. So,
loose no time in informing the nearest Eye Bank, or local Lion's Club.
